Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned the family, so she was raised by her mother, grandma and godparents. When she was a young girl Ford was diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to associations with words. Ford became interested in the field of acting during her teens and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School for a short time, Ford decided that this was not the best place for her. Ford was then able to apply for a spot in the Central School of Speech and Drama and was admitted on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. Before that, however, Ford made a television debut, appearing as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in the year 1991. Ford took the professional name of Catherine Tate. Tate first appeared on television in 1991and appeared on shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. as well as London's Burning. Her regular work in theatre brought her into The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. Tate gained recognition for her stand-up comedy that was added to her repertoire in the year 1996.
